The Impact of Plastic Pollution
Plastic pollution has become a major worldwide environmental issue according to the United Nations Environment Program. It is estimated that between 19 to 23 million tonnes of plastic waste enter aquatic environments every year, contaminating rivers, lakes and oceans. This pollution harms ecosystems, interferes with natural processes and can reduce their resilience to climate change, while also impacting communities that depend on these environments for food, livelihoods and economic stability.
At Geiger, we are helping address this challenge by working closely with and challenging our supply partners to expand the range of branded merchandise made from recycled ocean-bound plastic.
What is Ocean-Bound Plastic?
Ocean-Bound Plastic refers to plastic waste collected in areas close to coastlines and waterways before it reaches the ocean. By recovering and recycling these materials, they can be transformed into durable, high-quality products that give plastic a second life.
By using recycled ocean-bound plastic in merchandise, businesses can:
- Help reduce plastic entering the ocean
- Support responsible waste collection initiatives
- Promote circular economy practices
- Offer more sustainable branded merchandise options
It’s a simple but meaningful way to align your brand with environmental responsibility.
Sustainable Branded Products Made from Ocean-Bound Plastic
Here are a few examples of products that combine sustainability with practical everyday use.
Ocean Bottle 500ml 3‑in‑1 Gift Set
This versatile gift set includes a reusable bottle with interchangeable lids, making it suitable for a variety of everyday situations. Designed with durability and convenience in mind, it’s ideal for commuting, travelling or using at the office. The set includes three lid options: the original lid for leak-proof everyday use, the GO lid with a lockable straw, and the Brew lid designed for enjoying hot drinks.
Beyond its practical design, the bottle also supports ocean plastic collection initiatives. Ocean Bottle works with collection partners such as CleanHub and coastal communities to gather ocean-bound plastic before it reaches the sea. Collectors are paid fairly for their work, helping provide income that can support essentials such as food and education.
For every bottle or flask sold, the equivalent weight of 1,000 plastic bottles (around 11.4kg) is funded for collection. Each bottle also contains an NFC chip in its base that connects to the Ocean Bottle mobile app. By tapping the bottle and recording refills in the app, users can contribute to funding even more ocean-bound plastic collection.
SEAQUAL Sand Towel
This bath or beach towel is made using recycled materials, combining 70% recycled cotton and 30% recycled polyester SEAQUAL® fibre to create a soft yet durable fabric. With a weight of 500 g/m² and is available in two sizes, it offers both comfort and practicality whether used at the beach, pool or at home.
The recycled polyester used in the towel is produced through the SEAQUAL INITIATIVE, a global collaborative effort that works with ocean clean-up programmes to recover marine plastic waste and transform it into high-quality textile fibres. By giving value to materials collected from coastal environments and waterways, the initiative helps prevent plastic from entering the ocean while supporting a more circular approach to production.
Manufactured in the EU, this towel demonstrates how recovered materials can be repurposed into practical, everyday products that combine sustainability with quality design.
Xoopar Octopus Ocean Charging Cable
This practical multi-charging cable combines convenience with a sustainability story. Known for its distinctive and playful design, the Octopus cable from Xoopar has become a popular tech accessory thanks to its multiple connectors and compact, easy-to-use format.
This version is made using ocean-bound plastic, created from recycled plastic collected within 50 kilometres of coastlines before it can reach the sea. By repurposing this material, the product helps give plastic waste a second life while reducing the amount that enters marine environments.
Compact and versatile, the Octopus cable is designed to work with a range of everyday devices, making it a practical branded accessory for travel, commuting or use at the office.
